About us

Volleyball has a long and rich history in Laguna Beach, both as a sporting activity and as a unifying force in the community. In the early 1970’s Rolf Engen, local volleyball Hall of Fame player, created a youth volleyball club to support the high school teams. The results were historic, including league, county and multiple CIF championships.

From inception, the spirit of Laguna Beach Volleyball was to promote personal development and character via competition, instilling many of the principles of legendary coach John Wooden. It was created as a positive environment where sport is fun, and the love of playing develops strong values for life.

The non-profit Laguna Coast Volleyball Club endeavors to stay true to these philosophies, while giving the participating youth the opportunity to excel in the sport. The Club’s founder has close ties to the original Laguna Beach Volleyball. Leif Hanson honed his skills at the youth clinics and went on to play for the University of Hawaii and professionally on the AVP beach tour. Many other LBVB alumni have lent their support and talents to the club’s creation, including 2-time Olympic medalist Dain Blanton.

Leif Hanson, Founder & President

Leif was born and raised in Laguna beach where he started playing volleyball at the age of 11 on the blacktop courts of El Morro, at beaches throughout Laguna, and then a few years later in Laguna Beach’s first volleyball club. Leif graduated from Laguna Beach High School in 1983. During his time there, he won three CIF titles and earned 1983 CIF Player of the Year which earned him a scholarship to play volleyball at the University of Hawaii. Afterwards, he became a top pro beach volleyball player on the AVP Tour where he won both AVP and FIVB events around the world. Leif still enjoys playing beach volleyball in Laguna with old friends and also plays indoors representing the USA in the Masters division throughout Europe.
